Most Ohio Valley yards have mosquitoes in the shade and ticks along the tree line. A few weekly habits cut down both.
Start with water
Mosquitoes can breed in surprisingly small amounts of water, even a bottle cap. Once a week:
- Empty buckets, plant saucers, kids’ toys, and tarps
- Clear clogged gutters
- Refresh birdbaths
- Flip wheelbarrows and wading pools
Cut the harborage
Adult mosquitoes rest in shade. Trim dense shrubs, mow regularly, and keep vegetation off the sides of your house and deck.
Ticks live at the edges
Ticks are less about open lawn and more about transition zones: leaf litter, tall grass, brush, and the tree line. To reduce exposure:
- Mow often and clear leaf litter at the yard edge
- Create a gravel or mulch border between lawn and woods
- Keep play areas and seating away from the tree line
- Check people and pets after time outside, especially around hairlines, behind ears, and under arms
If you find a tick attached, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers and talk to your doctor if you have concerns about illness.
When professional treatment helps
If you have a wooded lot, a ravine behind the house, or standing water you cannot eliminate, a seasonal program can help. Professional service targets the shady spots where adult mosquitoes rest and adds a barrier around the yard, with tick treatment for properties that border woods. Start before the season peaks for the best result.
