Mouse-Proofing Your Ohio Valley Home Before Winter

Published

As temperatures drop, mice and rats look for warm, protected space with a reliable food source. That is usually your garage, basement, or the walls of your house. In the Ohio Valley, rodent pressure builds in fall and stays high through winter.

How small a gap can be

Mice can squeeze through openings about the size of a pencil, roughly a quarter inch. Rats need a bit more, about half an inch. A gap that looks too small to matter often is not.

Common entry points

A quick fall checklist

  1. Walk the outside of your house and look for gaps at ground level.
  2. Seal small gaps with steel wool or copper mesh pressed in, then caulk or use a sealant over it. Rodents chew through foam alone.
  3. Replace worn door sweeps and weatherstripping.
  4. Store pet food, birdseed, and grass seed in sealed containers.
  5. Move firewood and clutter away from the foundation.
  6. Declutter garages and basements so activity is easier to spot.

Why traps alone often fall short

Snap traps can catch the mice you can reach, but if the entry points stay open, new rodents keep arriving. Rodent poison can leave animals dying in walls and crawl spaces. Established activity needs an inspection, targeted treatment, exclusion where openings can be closed, and follow-up to confirm it is resolved.

Signs you already have a problem

Droppings in cabinets or along baseboards, scratching in walls at night, gnawed packaging, and greasy rub marks along walls are all common.
